Located in the Punjab province of Pakistan, suburbs of Multan, Multan Cricket Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium, commonly used for cricket.

The stadium is one of the best stadiums in Pakistan and could seat up to 35,000 people. The stadium owned and operated by Pakistan Cricket Board.

Profile

Built as a replacement for the Qasim Bagh stadium, Multan Cricket Stadium hosted its first Test match in 2001 when Pakistan took on Bangladesh in the Asian Test Championship. Boasting one of the greenest outfields visible in the country, Multan Cricket Stadium also played host to one memorable Pakistan-India Test that saw Virender Sehwag smash a career-best 309 and enable India to inflict an innings defeat over Pakistan.

The 30,000-capacity stadium is also able to hold day-night matches with a set of floodlights installed at the venue. The floodlights, however, were not needed for the inaugural match as India rounded off a quick victory over Pakistan.

History

The stadium was inaugurated in the year 2001, before which the Ibn-e-Qasim Bagh Stadium was the major stadium in the region of Multan.

The first ODI and Test match played on this stadium was between the hosts Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Major Matches

The stadium hosted one of the most memorable matches in cricket for India. In a match between India and Pakistan in the year 2004, Virender Sehwag became the first Indian to score a test triple hundred. He scored 309 runs in the field of Multan Cricket Stadium.

Controversy

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored a century during the second day's play in the first test match between India and Pakistan in Multan in the year 2004. Sachin was nearing his double hundred, and was on 194 runs, when Indian skipper Rahul Dravid declared the innings.

The match triggered stories of serious differences between Dravid and Tendulkar, but the two laughed it off as an honest difference in the dressing room.

Peshawar Zalmi will be looking to claim the number 1 spot in the points table as they take on the Multan Sultans on Friday in the latest season of the Pakistan Super League.

It was a brilliant bowling effort by the Sultans as they bowled out the Gladiators with just 110 runs on the board. Young Ihsanullah, who is playing his second season in the PSL bowled a superb spell, picking up 5 wickets for 12 runs in his 4 overs. During the chase, Mohammad Rizwan continued with his excellent form and scored an unbeaten 28. But it was Rilee Rossouw who stole the limelight by scoring 78 of 42 deliveries as the Sultans sailed through by 9 wickets, greatly improving their NRR. With the likes of Kieron Pollard, David Miller, and Khushdil Shah batting lower down the order, the Multan Sultans have one of the strongest batting line-ups in the PSL.

Peshawar Zalmi had a perfect start to the season as they defeated the Karachi Kings in the opening match. Babar Azam and Tom Kohler-Cadmore put up a 139-run partnership to help their team reach a mammoth 199 runs in 20 overs. The bowling effort was a bit underwhelming despite having such a huge total to defend and the match went down to the very last over. Peshawar did manage to hold their nerve and in the end, won the game by 2 runs. In addition to Babar Azam and Kohler-Cadmore, Peshawar Zalmi will depend on Mohammad Haris and Bhanuka Rajapaksa to score some runs here. Wahab Riaz will lead the pace attack and will be aided by Khurram Shahzad and Salman Irshad, while Shakib and Sufiyan Muqeem are the two spinners on the team.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

The Multan Cricket Stadium has a good surface to bat on but it also does offer assistance to the bowlers,  especially early on in the game. The average first-inning score here is around 165. However, the team batting first will be looking to score over 180 to feel safe. The weather is expected to be clear with temperatures ranging from 19-25 degrees Celsius.

MS VS PZ TOSS PREDICTION

The team winning the toss will likely opt to bowl first here.

The Multan Sultans will play hosts to the Quetta Gladiators as they look to get back to winning ways in the Pakistan Super League.

The Quetta Gladiators haven’t been in the best of forms in the last few seasons as they have crashed out of the group stages in all three of them. In the previous season too, they could manage just 4 wins in 10 matches and finished 5th on the points table. The Quetta Gladiators haven’t been in the best of forms in the last few seasons as they have crashed out of the group stages in all three of them. In the previous season too, they could manage just 4 wins in 10 matches and finished 5th on the points table.I ftikhar Ahmed was in excellent touch during the BPL 2023 and will be hoping to build up on that. Joining him will be the likes of Jason Roy, Will Smead, Martin Guptill, and Will Jacks. While the team has let go of James Faulkner and Tanvir Sohail, they included some good all-rounders like Odean Smith and Wanindu Hasaranga.

The Sultans ended the previous season as the runners-up as they lost out to Islamabad United in the Finals. However, they will be hoping to lift the trophy this time around. Rizwan received good support from his opening partner, Shan Masood as the duo put up a 100-run partnership for the opening wicket. The team needed 15 runs off the final over, and with Pollard and Khushdil Shah at the crease, didn’t seem to be a big task. However, the Sultans lost 3 wickets in the first 4 deliveries of that over and ended up losing the match by 1 run. There would be  responsibilities will rest on the likes of Shahnawaz Dahani, Akeal Hossain, and the young Ihsanullah to put the opposition batsmen under pressure.

PSL 2023 is back and we will have a repeat of last season's final to set us off. Lahore Qalandars, the defending champions will be taking on the Multan Sultans to start the season. Both these teams have been very consistent in the last couple of years in the Pakistan Super League but some team changes, injuries, and player unavailabilities could make this a tougher season for both of them.

Multan Sultans have got a balance right since last few seasons and also saw a lot of success in the recent times with Rizwan and Masood making a compatible opening pair at the top of the order. They have also fire power and depth in the Batting lineup with the liked pf Keiron pollard, David Miller and Khusdil Shah. Usama Mir is a young prospect for the side and can come out of the boxes for the Lahore Qalandars batter. Joshua Little and Shahnawaz Dhani will be the pacers to be backed upon. Akeal Hossein has also been quite successful in this form of cricket.

Lahore Qalandars are the Defending Champions and would feel confident facing as they were victorious in the last outing in PSL 2022 Final . Fakhar Zaman is arguably the best batsman for the side and also have some young talent in the likes of  Abdullah Shafique and Kamran Ghulam. Sam Billings and Sikandar Raza would have the responsibility to hold the Middle order together as both of them are highly experienced in this form of Cricket.

When talking about the Bowling Department , no team seems closer to Lahore Qalandars as having presence of Two best pacers going around the world cricket i.e Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf. David Weise and Sikandar Raza are the all rounders team would banked upon . Zaman khan has also been impressive in the past season.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

There is no rain forecast in Multan on match day. The temperatures will be quite comfortable to play in although dew might be a bit of a factor. The pitch in Multan is flat and good for batting. The average score at this venue is close to 170 but the PSL will be played in Multan after a gap of two years.

MS VS LQ TOSS PREDICTION

The team that wins the toss is likely to want to bat first.
