Where it all began. In September 1880, the first-ever Test match on English soil was played here, where England defeated Australia by five wickets. On debut, WG Grace scored a century. Traditionally, the Oval has also been the venue where many of England’s Test series conclude.

This is the historic ground where The Ashes was born. In August 1882, England was chasing just 85 runs but collapsed from 51/2 to 78 all out. The next day, The Sporting Times published its famous “mock obituary,” giving birth to the legend of the Ashes.

  • 1902 – England clinched a thrilling one-wicket win thanks to Gilbert Jessop’s sensational century.
  • 1930Don Bradman (244) and Bill Ponsford (266) added 451 runs; Australia piled up 701.
  • 1938 – England scored 903/7 and beat Australia by an innings and 579 runs.
  • 1948 – Bradman’s farewell duck.
  • 1953Denis Compton’s boundary sealed the Ashes’ return to England.
  • 1976Michael Holding took 14 wickets in a single Test.
  • 1994Devon Malcolm’s 9/57 against South Africa became legendary.

🏏 Foundation and Architecture

  • Developed in the 1790s, when the surrounding circular road was laid out.
  • In 1845, 10,000 grass turfs were brought from Tooting Common to transform it into a cricket ground.
  • It became the headquarters of Surrey County Cricket Club.
  • The ground is famously recognized by its gasometers and the old pavilion (built in 1890).
  • In 2004, a £25 million redevelopment modernized the Oval into a world-class stadium.

  • 1872 – Hosted the first FA Cup Final.
  • 1873 – England played its first international football match against Scotland here.
  • 1874–1892 – Regular home of the FA Cup Final.
  • 1876 – Venue for the first rugby internationals (England vs Wales, England vs Scotland).
  • 1877 – Hosted the first university rugby match.
  • It has also staged rock concerts (The Who, The Faces – 1971), ice skating, and Australian Rules football.
  • During World War II, it was used as a temporary shelter for prisoners.
